What Makes Just Dance Classes the Best?

1) Small Class Sizes Regularly offered classes are small in size, allowing our instructors to devote more focus and attention to each dancer. As a result of a more individualized teaching program, students progress faster and are able to learn a wider array of techniques, making for a more dynamic dance experience. For those students who aspire to participate in a larger project, we offer a select few large group classes.2) Performance Experience Students at Just Dance perform for parents and peers after class regularly. This boosts their self-esteem and increases their performance opportunities. By dancing in front of audiences often, our dancers develop confidence and courage that they can take with them both on the stage and off. A nice benefit of this system for our parents is that they have an opportunity to watch their children dance as well as track their progress. Every year we put on a year-end recital to showcase the talents of our students. We take pride in the stage experience we give our students. Costumes are ordered when something suitable is available, but often they are custom made by our experienced seamstresses. Our volunteer team of prop builders creates a custom array of stage and dance props, adding new and exciting dimensions of dance to our students every year. Every student is invited to participate in a choreographed finale.3) Variety of Styles and Disciplines Certified instructors provide diverse styles and teaching methods to our students. All our teachers are very adaptable, able to quickly change their teaching methods to meet student and class needs. We also offer a wide variety of disciplines with specialist Instructors to ensure the quality of education in each, unique type of dance.

Acro

What is Acro? Acro, or acrobatic dance, is a combination of traditional jazz movement and precision acrobatics. Students focus on developing flexibility and strength as well as learning a variety of gymnastic type movements. Classes Just Dance offers recreational Acro classes at the beginner and higher levels. Our acro program is open to students over the age of 7. We recommend that dancers interested in this discipline who have limitted previous experience in dance take Jazz classes in conjunction with Acro. Just Dance does not currently offer compeitive classes in the discipline of Acro.

Adult Classes

Adult Classes are currently offered in the styles of Musical Theatre and Tap.Musical Theatre A fun way to get active, meet new friends and explore creative movement. Lessons focus on basic dance movement, personal expression and characterization. Classes are held one evening a week and dancers are encouraged, though not required, to participate in the culminating year-end recital. Steps are geared towards the beginner level, then adjusted according to the overall skill level of the group.ZumbaZumba is a Latin-inspired dance fitness program. It involves dance and aerobic elements.Classes are Tuesdays 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.12 weeks for $100.00 plus HSTWhat About Other Styles of Dance? Availability of classes is determined by interest. Ballet and Pointe

What are Ballet and Pointe?Traditionally, Ballet is a formal performance art that emphasizes physical mastery, theatricality and personal discipline. Ballet performances often tell a story. Dancers frequently portray characters while they dance. Recently, Ballet has become more prevalent in popular culture and less rigorous forms have become more common. However, the basic themes of technique, performance and self-discipline still remain. Pointe is a specialized form of Ballet whereby the dancer uses shoes with a hardened toe, or "pointe". Pointe dancers must have a solid foundation in Soft-Shoe Ballet in order to succeed in Pointe.Baby BalletChildren under the age of 6 are eligible to register in our Baby Ballet program which is a relaxed class aimed at teaching the basics of creative movement to young dancers. Students learn basic body control, musicality and theatricality through engaging exercises and games.Advanced ClassesJust Dance offers RAD Ballet as girls advance in their skill and ability in the discipline. Girls involved in competitive classes are required to participate in advanced ballet classes in conjunction with their regularly scheduled classes. Competitive Ballet is offered as interest permits.

Hip Hop

What is Hip Hop?Hip Hop is an expressive dance with a multitude of historical roots. At Just Dance we offer stage Hip Hop, which combines movements inspired by popular culture and steps choreographed to appear spontaneous. This style of dance is focused on the flow and soul of the music, with the dancers being encouraged to add their own flavour to the steps taught by the Instructor.Recreational ClassesJust Dance offers stage Hip Hop classes to students aged four to eighteen, ranging from beginner to advanced. Competitive ClassesWe offer junior, intermediate and senior level Hip Hop competitive group classes to qualifying individuals as well as more specialized classes for dancers interested in trios, duets and solos.

What is Jazz?Jazz is an energetic form of dance that has evolved over the years with the music of popular culture. It's technique is rooted firmly in Ballet, but its style is completely different. Dancers in Jazz classes focus on developing flexibility, strength and skill in traditional jazz leaps, turns, kicks etc... Students will learn to perform in synchronization with other dancers as well as have experience with improvisation and creative styling.Recreational ClassesJust Dance offers Jazz classes to students aged four to eighteen, ranging from beginner to advanced. Competitive ClassesWe offer junior, intermediate and senior level Jazz competitive classes to qualifying individuals as well as more specialized classes for dancers interested in trios, duets and solos.

What is Lyrical?Lyrical is an emotional form of dance that combines Jazz and Ballet technique with common, everyday movements in order to interpret the lyrics of a song. Dancers focus on connecting to the music and their choreography in order to convey feeling or meaning to an audience. Recreational ClassesRecreational Lyrical classes are regularly offered to students from ages twelve to eighteen. In years where sufficient interest is held by younger dancers, classes are offered to students younger than twelve. Please call the studio at 519-763-5188 for our detailed Lyrical class offerings.Competitive ClassesCompetitive Lyrical classes are currently available at the intermediate and senior level to qualifying dancers as well as more specialized classes for dancers interested in trios, duets and solos.

Musical Theatre

What is Musical Theatre?Musical Theatre is a combination of lip-synching and dance. Students act out roles and characters within the song. Students learn theatricality and expressiveness. Dancers competing in Musical Theatre are required to take a recreational Jazz class in order to improve technique. Recreational ClassesJust Dance offers Musical Theatre classes to students aged four to eighteen, ranging from beginner to advanced. Adult Musical Theatre is also available. Stretch and Technique

What is Stretch and Technique?Students in these classes do not focus on perfecting a single culminating dance as in other classes. Instead, dancers devote their attention to the physical and mental development necessary for success in choreography. Common exercises in Stretch and Technique class can include:Stretches and Flexability TrainingStrength TrainingEndurance and Cardio Vascular TrainingTeaching and Practicing of Standard Jazz Steps used Commonly in ChoreographyShort Choreography (Often Exploring Varying Styles)Who Can Join Stretch and Technique?Everyone is able to join Stretch and Technique, but not everyone is required to take the class. This class is recommended for dancers serious about improving their ability and for dancers interested in auditioning for the Competitive Team. Members of the Competitive Team are required to take this class in addition to their regularly scheduled classes.Why is Stretch and Technique Required for Competitive Students?Classes for competitive students focus on choreography - learning a dance and perfecting it. Technique that is required for choreography is covered, but varies from year to year. In Stretch and Technique, students build technique in an ordered progression that ensures they are prepared for the demanding challenges of their choreography classes. By progressing in Stretch and Technique, students also learn to pick up choreography faster. This skill is also important for competitive dancers since the competition season begins in April, shortening the learning period by two months.

What is Tap?Tap is a rhythmic dance with dancers using shoes tipped with metal plates, or "taps". Students learn musicality by interpretting rhythms in exercises and dances. Tap is a diverse style and students are challenged to explore a variety of classic and contemporary styles in classwork.Recreational ClassesJust Dance offers Tap classes to students aged four to eighteen, ranging from beginner to advanced. Adult Tap is also available. Competitive Classes We offer junior, intermediate and senior level Tap competitive classes to qualifying individuals as well as more specialized classes for dancers interested in trios, duets and solos.

Thank you for choosing or considering Just Dance School of Dance for the upcoming 2011/12 Dance Season. We offer both recreational and competitive classes in a variety of disciplines for all ages and levels of ability. Some of the reasons for just dancing with us include: •Certified, well-trained, fun and inspiring instructors •Low teacher to student ratio •Competitive fees •Generous multi-class discounts •Convenient equal payment options for class fees •Free class trials •Large studios •Large, comfortable waiting area with T.V. and DVD player •Viewing windows •Lunchroom equipped with a microwave and refrigerator •Age appropriate music, costumes and choreography •Fun, family oriented events throughout the season •Fund raising opportunities •Year-end show at the River Run CentrePolicies •Students are initially placed in classes based on their ages and years of experience. However, depending on their ability, an instructor may want to transfer some students to different classes. •All concerns, artistic and administrative, must be directed to the office and not to the instructors. The instructors are very busy teaching and do not want to take time away from doing so. •The office will always do its best to make sure that every student receives the latest newsletters but our view is that it is ultimately the parents/guardians responsibility to stay informed. Visiting or calling the studio periodically is a great way to do this. Newsletters will also be posted on our website. •We firmly believe that regular attendance is crucial for a successful year and recital. We hope that you feel the same. Please call the studio if your child is going to be absent. •The studio reserves the right to combine, cancel or change the times of classes due to registration.Important DatesSaturday, September 10th: The first day of classes.Friday, September 30th: All post-dated cheques for classes are to be handed into the office.Saturday, October 1st: The last day for free class trials.Saturday, October 8th & Monday October 10th: The studio is closed for Thanksgiving.Saturday, December 24th to Friday January 6th: The studio will be closed for Christmas Break.Monday, February 20th:The studio will be closed for Family Day.Monday, March 12th to Sunday, March 18th: The studio will be closed for March Break.Friday, April 6th The studio will be closed for Good FridayDress Rehearsal Date is not yet determined8th Annual Recital Date is not yet determinedClass Fees and Payment OptionsPlease call or visit the studio for a 2011/12 Class Fee List. We do offer multi-class discounts to those students who take three classes or more as well as to the third sibling in a family. We also offer convenient equal payment options, 9 payments (September to May) for those students taking 1 or 2 classes and 12 payments (September to August) for those taking 3 or more classes. Post-dated cheques are preferred. A $15.00 Service Charge will be added for all returned cheques.CostumesThere is a $65.00 deposit, per costume, due no later than November 30th. Costumes will not be ordered for anyone who has not paid their deposit. Costumes usually start arriving at the studio, where they will be altered, in March. Costumes will only be distributed to those who have paid their costume balances and have current accounts. Costume balances must be paid in cash. All performers not wearing long pants must purchase new tights from the studio. Unfortunately there cannot be any exceptions to this.Dress CodeTHE FOLLOWING DOES NOT APPLY TO COMPETITION STUDENTS WHO MUST WEAR BODYSUITS AND TIGHTS AT ALL TIMES AND ARE NOT ALLOWED TO WEAR SKIRTS FOR BALLET. SWEAT PANTS AND LOOSE FITTING T-SHIRTS FOR HIP HOP ARE ALLOWED AT THE DISCRETION OF EACH INSTRUCTOR.All recreational students (males and hip hop students excluded) must wear a one-piece bodysuit and tights. Bodysuits and tights may be any colour but we prefer ballet students to wear Mondor Ballerina Pink tights. Students may wear skirts or yoga type shorts and pants. Sweat pants and loose fitting shirts are allowed for hip hop classes only. JEANS ARE NOT ALLOWED FOR ANY CLASS. No exceptions! All ballet students must wear their hair in a bun. All other students must have their hair pulled back into a ponytail and combed off of their face.Required Shoes •COMPETITION STUDENTS SHOULD NOT PURCHASE ANY SHOES UNTIL THEY ARE NOTIFIED BY THE OFFICE!! •Because of our free-trial period, it is not expected that students have the proper shoes the first day of classes. It is a good idea to get them shortly thereafter so that the student can become accustomed to dancing in the proper shoes. •All students must have the proper shoes for their respective classes for the recital.Ballet: So Danca Ballet Slippers (Full-Sole for Intermediate & Seniors, Half-Sole for Beginners & Juniors)Jazz & Musical Theatre: Capezio or So Danca Caramel Jazz Boots Contemporary & Lyrical: Tan Capezio Foot UndeezTap: Patent for Beginners Black Mary Janes or Lace-ups for Juniors Black Lace-ups for Intermediates & SeniorsHip Hop: Shoes must be worn at all times during Hip Hop classes! Both of the studios at Just Dance School of Dance boast professionally fitted dance floors, portable dance barres and full body mirrors. Studio B is also equipped with viewing windows from which parents may watch their children dance.Our spacious waiting room is equipped for both adults and children. We offer an HD television with a DVD player for dancers and their siblings, as well as board games/puzzles and colouring books. Outside our waiting room, we have a small patio with a picnic table visible from the waiting area. The front desk is located adjacent to the waiting room, and a staff member is always on hand during regularly scheduled class times to address your concerns.Next to our studios is a space for dancers to use before, after and between classes. This area provides dancers with a fridge and microwave for food storage and preparation, tables for eating, working and socializing as well as limited storage space for students to keep their belongings in on a day-use basis. Just Dance will not be held responsible for items that are lost, stolen or damaged.

Mission Statement Mission Statement The management and instructors of Just Dance School of Dance will strive to create an atmosphere where competition team members are encouraged to continuously put their best effort forward in the spirit of fun and co-operation. It is our hope that students will realize that authentic success comes not necessarily from reaching or exceeding their performance goals, but with the satisfaction of knowing they have done their best. Students and families should realize that the competitive experience is purely subjective, scores being the responsibility of the adjudicators and everything else comes from within.

Competitive vs Recreational Recreational vs Competitive ClassesIn recreational classes students learn the fundamentals of dance in a relaxed atmosphere. Learning is enhanced because the students are having fun without the pressure of competitive achievement. The foundation of proper dance technique and movement that is mastered in recreational classes is further developed in competitive classes with the specific goal of competitive success. Students who are properly transitioned from one type of class to the other are given increased opportunities to perform which not only helps in developing their confidence and ability but also teaches them the value of sportmanship and self-discipline.Just Dance has enjoyed a lot of success at competitions over the past seven years, winning many special and overall awrds, individually and in groups. Success ia a winning combination of students' natural ability, hard work and dedication. Hard work and dedication are synonymous with more time and more money than what is expected from recreational dancers.

Is Competition Right for Me How Do We Know If Competition Is Right for Us?Competition is not suitable for every dancer, even those with incredible talent. Consider the following questions to determine if it is right for you.Student's Perspective1) I love birthday parties, and would never miss any that I am invited to.2) I can't wait to go to competitions out of town because the hotels have poolsand I can swim all the time.3) I think I am early for a 5:30 pm class when I arrive at 5:29.4) I love dance class because it is a time when I can find out what is going on with my friends.Parents' Perspective1) My boss is very strict and would never allow me to take time off of work to bring my child to a competition.2) I would never ask another parent to take my child to a competition when I can't.3) Newsletters are just a waste of paper. I never read them.4) Dance is great because I can just drop my kid off at the door and never have to go into the studio.You may want to consider recreational classes if yes was the answer to any of the above questions.

Joining the Team Joining the Competition Team The competition team is determined over a summer-long audition process, open to any student between the ages of four and eighteen. Membership on the competition team one year is not a guarantee for membership in subsequent years. Faculty members use careful consideration of past performance, ability , and attendance as well as age and size of a student when detemining membership. Although natural ability and technique are important factors, the students' potential, performance ability (face and presentation), willingness to learn and improve as well as take constructive criticism are also considered. Most importantly, is a student's positive attitude.

Celebrating a Birthday?

If you love to dance, Just Dance School of Dance would like to invite you to celebrate your birthday with us! Birthday girls and boys deserve a day that is fun for both themselves and their guests. We take pride in offering a customized party package that allows the star of the day to choose how they want to celebrate. Birthday parties include a professionally choreographed dance routine taught to all party guests who are later encouraged to perform for their parents upon pick up. There is plenty of space for party-goers to dance and eat. Refrigerators are available to store food if necessary. Our studio is large and can accomodate as many children as you would like to invite. Public School Workshops

June 10th, 2011 at Guelph LakeRelay For Life is an overnight, non-competitive relay that celebrates cancer survivors and pays tribute to the lives of loved ones. Just Dance entered a team , "Broadway Bound", to show our appreciation for the support we receive from our community throughout the year. Many of our dancers performed while others and their families came out to enjoy the spirit of the event. Collectively, Just Dance raised almost $5000.00 that will be used for cancer research and community support programs.
"British Invasion" at River Run Centre, February 13th, 2011Just Dance once again teamed up with the Guelph Concert Band for a performance. Seventeen girls danced to live music and wowed the crowd with choreography by Julia Hillis, Rachel Hillis, Chrissy Miller, and Clara Vidotto.
Dance Workshops at Mitchell Woods Public School with Grade 7's & 8's, were held June 15th & 22nd. Classes learned basic jazz and hip hop technique as well as short choreographed combinations.
